POST-READING QUESTIONS

Questions can be written or discussed.

1. What truth is in the belief that “a cursed person is a ruined person” (p. 2) as the people of Lagonia believe? How is that reflected in real life?

2. Kora observes her father looks to the tower that holds the gold more than he does her (p. 4). How does this show the power of wealth? What insight does this give you into their relationship? With her father’s relationship with money?

3. Is it fair for the people of Lagonia to blame Kora for the attackers sent by Dionysus as Lord Lucar does on page 26?

4. Kora reasons that if she can defeat Dionysus, the god who placed the curse, her people will see her as a leader (p. 35). Do leaders need to defeat something in order to be respected? Must leaders be stronger than everything around them in order to lead?

5. Royce and Kora choose a path in order to get to the Oracle. Once the path is chosen, the others disappear. Kora observes that their path is sealed (p. 42). How does that reflect the real world and chosen paths? How is your path sealed once you make a choice?

6. When the Oracle says, “All paths have different destinations. Some just lead to them faster and some lead to them not at all” (p. 65), what does she mean?

7. The Oracle says, “The signposts foreshadow what may be to come, and if you cannot overcome those small challenges now, there is little hope you will in the future” (p. 65). In what ways does that reflect real life?

8. When Kora and Royce first meet the Oracle in the cave on page 64, what details in her description are you most drawn to? What do they tell you about the character?

9. The Oracle says, “Being a leader requires tough decisions and sacrifices that others aren’t required to make” (p. 80). How do those decisions and sacrifices define who a leader is?

10. When Royce says, “The Kora I know marched into the Temptresses’ lair unafraid,” she responds, “That Kora had no idea what was waiting for her. This Kora does” (p. 81). Does it take more courage to face what you don’t know or what you do know? Explain.

11. Even though Kora wants to hate Triton, she is able to empathize with him when she realizes she knows what it’s like to be trapped behind walls (p. 143). How does having a similar situation allow you to connect with someone you want to hate? How does that change the outcome of the relationship?

12. Kora says, “I know what it does to a person to be locked up. I know that you’re going to retreat deeper and deeper into your mind until you can’t find your way out” (p. 147). Do you agree with this statement? In what ways is/isn’t it true?

13. Kora realizes that she and Triton may have more in common that she thought (p. 179). In what ways are they similar?
